Riparian Habitat Restoration

 

The goal of each restoration project on the ‘Ahakhav Tribal Preserve is to protect cultural resources for future generations, and to protect native wildlife, plants, and their habitat.

All projects focus on the removal of invasive Saltcedar (Tamarisk spp.) and the resurgence of native Cottonwood (Populus fremontii), Goodding willow (Salix gooddingii), Coyote willow (Salix exigua), Honey mesquite (Prosopis  glandulosa), and Screwbean mesquite (Prosopis pubescens).

Restoration projects utilize seed and pole trees planted in a variety of experimental planting methods.  
Bird and vegetation monitoring is conducted annually to test the success of all restoration projects, and to identify areas mature enough to undergo adaptive management. Bird counts and vegetation surveys are conducted in the fall, and special bird species are surveyed in the spring.
